St.Philip was the first native saint of the Americas and is the patron saint of Mexico City, where he was born. As a teenager, he worked as a trader in the Philippines. It was there that St.Philip responded to the call to religious life and joined the Franciscans to work with the sick. In 1596 St.Philip boarded a Spanish-owned ship to take him back to Mexico where he was to be ordained as a priest. The vessel was caught in a storm and wrecked along the coast of Japan. Amid rumors that the Emperor of Spain had sent Philip and other missionaries aboard the ship as spies as part of a plot to conquer Japan, he was imprisoned and became a martyr after being crucified and stabbed with spears.
